Junior: Can you tell us a little about being a childrenswear buyer for Jigsaw Junior?
Barbara: Working with the team is such fun because identifying trends in the marketplace is necessarily playful, and there is so much going on now that it's an area which allows a lot of creativity. Our meetings are crucial on fit, comfort, and fabrications and we are all so passionate about the product. Looking at how and where girls wear particular items is essential and being a mum of twin 11 year old girls myself, I have such a vested interest. Also, we have seen that the childrenswear market is a fabulous growth area for us as we expand further into new outlets and online.
Do you have any set style rules when buying Jigsaw Junior collections for children?
Jigsaw Junior has a unique handwriting which we use as our guide. Good taste is crucial and with so many mums working at Jigsaw HQ we always have a healthy debate on what the range is and also it's evolution. We work with such beautiful fabrics, many of which appear in the womenswear collection, so there is an element of 'mini-me' but always age appropriate and with Jigsaw Junior's signature.
What are your own earliest fashion memories?
My obsession with those cut-out paper dolls you could dress. It was so evident, even at a young age, that I was a lover of fashion and so lovely to see my daughters enjoying fashion now, history repeating itself.
What were your inspirations for the childrenswear SS14 collection?
We are a proudly British brand and there is evidently British DNA within our collections and imagery: in the beautiful sandy (and often windy!) beaches, time spent on allotments, berry picking and in the garden and our affinity with nature whether plants and flowers or birds and animals. In fact, the cute dog T-shirts we have in this summer's collection star 'the Jigsaw dogs', Berry and Didi, who spend a lot of time in our Kew head office and are made a great fuss of!
What are your top tips for dressing children in the summer?
You have to allow a certain element of free reign, that freedom of style, as little girls love to dress up. Pretty-pretty items can look easily cool when teamed with more casual footwear. Also, our British summers call for a super piece of our knitwear or floral denim jacket to be at hand for when the weather turns and the girls aren't ready to leave the swings!
What are your top three must have pieces from the SS14 Jigsaw Junior collection?
The jacquard sweatshirt is a cool take for kids on the sports luxe trend (in cornflower or cerise). The stripe knit dress in either red or blue which is beautifully nautical and such a super holiday wear and also is cute under a soft tailored jacket or knit for a smart lunch where play is allowed! Also, the painted floral trousers with an elastic waist and drawstring cord and cuffed hems are pretty and practical - a real must-have.
How does it feel when you see a child wearing Jigsaw Junior?
It always makes me feel so proud. I picked my daughters up the other day from school and one of the girls I saw was wearing our beautiful tweed coat, and I instantly smiled!
