Hannah Evans as a young girl

Author and mother-of-three Hannah Evans explores her role as a mother raising three boys in her book MOB Rule: Lessons Learned by a Mother of Boys (Bloomsbury, £12.99). Here Hannah shares some thoughts about her own upbringing:

Where did you grow up? Whitley Bay, Germany, Scotland and Devon. That's why my accent's a little bit odd.

What did you love about the place you grew up? Moving around meant I had to be resourceful and sociable - life lessons which serve me well, even now. Although I'm not sure I saw it quite like that at the time.

What are your best childhood memories? Falling asleep to my parents chatting, in the back of the car; heading off for the day on my mad pony Rusty - no mobile, no map, just me and him.

Did you have siblings and what was your relationship like? I have an elder brother, Dan who was into computers. And I was not. But we get on really well now, especially as we both have kids and understand the 'joys' of parenthood.

What did you want to do when you grew up? When I was eight I read 'The Young Visitors' by Daisy Ashford and decided then and there that I would be a writer. Thereafter I wanted to be a nurse, an explorer and a vet but unfortunately I was never that good at science. Without sounding too corny though, even as a little girl what I really wanted to be when I grew up was... a mum.

What did you end up doing? Much to (I suspect) my parents' horror, I have drifted into a variety of jobs, all based loosely around the theme of communication. Motherhood is probably my first proper planned 'career'. The fact that I can now combine my love of writing and my boys makes me feel like a very lucky girl indeed.
