Stratford-Upon-Avon is a wonderful place for the family

When our nine-year old daughter was cast in her school play with a major speaking role (as opposed to a tree), we decided to cultivate this new-found love of acting with a visit to Shakespeare’s birth place.

Stratford-Upon-Avon is a wonderful place for the family, with its parks, gardens and the River Avon itself providing a relaxing environment for exploring and learning. But after touring the 17th century Tudor House in which The Bard was born and the highly recommended Anne Hathaway’s cottage, small legs were tired and tummies were rumbling. James, five asked, “Can we have lunch now daddy?”

“To eat or not to eat, that is the question” I offered. I could actually hear my wife’s eyes rolling in her head, so off we set for Le Bistrot Pierre, located within the Swan’s Nest Hotel, on the banks of the river Avon.

Picturesque views

With its picturesque views and outdoor terrace, this restaurant is ideal for families and is just a five minute walk from the town centre, or the Royal Shakespeare Company.

There are fifteen branches of Pierre’s nationwide, each offering a love and celebration of French cuisine. All dishes are freshly prepared using a mix of artisan provincial ingredients and locally sourced foods, in the style of typical French bistrots.

We noticed the welcoming ambience as soon as we entered, there was a warm friendly buzz about the place, sophisticated yet relaxed. As soon as we were seated the children were presented with an array of artistic distractions and pencils to get them drawing and, more importantly, occupied. This allowed us to concentrate on the essential part of our visit, the food.

All the children’s favourites were on offer; roasted chicken breast, fish goujons, omelette, macaroni cheese and burger. Also if they were feeling adventurous they could plump for croque monsieur. On this occasion though, they played safe.

Tucking in time!

So while the children tucked into their mini burgers, which were ‘yummy’ so I am told, we grown-ups were awarded time to catch up with our friends over a leisurely lunch of  Steak-frites, Porc a l’ancienne, BeoufBraisé with delicious dauphinoise potatoes and the house speciality Tarte Flambée. All excellent choices and every morsel was devoured. We couldn’t leave without a dessert which, of course, the French are renowned for and once I’d seen that my favourite, Crème Brulee was on the menu I was quite excited!

Deep in discussion

The restaurant’s ambience was that of a relaxed French family, with children on many of the surrounding tables, we chatted easily with our neighbours and no one seemed to mind that we were a livelier table, there was a mutual feeling of us all being in the same boat, as it were.

Beautiful Stratford-Upon-Avon

When it came to leaving we realised we’d been there for a good couple of hours, but we were not hurried out of the restaurant by any means, and the children’s patience was rewarded with a run around by the river to let off steam and a well earned game of hide and seek with the swans.
